A key card and water. Coffee is a word with two bars.
In this lesson you will
- Write シ and ツ as a pair that no longer swap
- Read ー as length, not as a hyphen you may skip
- Order コーヒー and read ホテル with です / お願いします
The bar ー is a sound. Drop it and you have a different job: copy, not coffee. Students who “already know the English word” are the ones who skip the bar.
Today’s scene
How it works
サ シ ス セ ソ, タ チ ツ テ ト, ナ ニ ヌ ネ ノ, ハ ヒ フ ヘ ホ are twenty beats, not a poster to photograph once. シ and ツ are the pair that ruin signs if you learned them from a blur. Write them together. ノ is a slash; ソ adds a tick. ン arrives tomorrow — notice ソ today so ン has a place to differ.
The long mark ー stretches the vowel before it. コーヒー is コ・ー・ヒ・ー, four beats with two holds. ホテル is ホ・テ・ル, no bar. Do not invent ー because English “hotel” feels long. Do not drop ー from コーヒー because the line looks optional. Small ッ in ホット is the hitch you already know from hiragana っ.
Two words to carry into a building: コーヒー and ホテル. コーヒー、お願いします is a complete polite request. ホテルです can name the place when the kanji on the facade is still a wall. セット, スープ, ホット, ケーキ repeat on boards. Collect a method — find ー, find ッ, read left to right — not fifty drinks.
Practice loop: the four rows, then シ versus ツ, then コーヒー, ホテル, ホット, セット. Dakuten still works: バ from ハ, as in バス. ホテル案内 mixes katakana and kanji; you owe ホテル this week, not 案内 as writing homework. Stay in です and ます even while the chart is crowded.
Yesterday ア and カ taught you that katakana is a flag, not a decoration. Today the flag gets crowded. サ タ ナ ハ are four rows — twenty shapes — and they are the rows that turn a cafe board into a sentence you can actually order from. コーヒー lives here. ホテル lives here. The long mark ー lives here, and it is not a hyphen you may skip because English does not write it. One missing bar, and coffee becomes copy.
Read the rows as beats, not as English letter names. サ シ ス セ ソ. シ is the celebrity trap of this page: a short “shi”, three marks that slant one way. ツ slants another way. If you learned them from a blurry screenshot, they will swap for a year. Write シ and ツ as a pair, large, then small, and say the names し and つ — the same mouths as hiragana, new pens. ソ is a falling slash with a tick; ン, tomorrow’s character, is the cousin that ruins signs if you rush. Notice ソ today so ン has somewhere to land. タ チ ツ テ ト. チ is not English “chi” stretched into a smile. ツ you already met as シ’s enemy. ナ ニ ヌ ネ ノ. ノ is a single slash; students turn it into ソ by adding a tick that does not belong. ハ ヒ フ ヘ ホ. フ is a corner with a hook; ヘ is a mountain; ホ will sit inside ホテル and ホット. Copy the chart. Hide the chart. A row you can only recite with the poster in the corner is not a row you own.
The long mark ー is the new grammar of this lesson even though it is “only a line”. In katakana, a long vowel is often this bar, not a doubled letter. コーヒー is ko-o-hi-i in beats: コ, ー, ヒ, ー. Two stretches. English “coffee” has a mess of letters that do not map. Japanese writes the stretch where the voice actually stays. ホテル is ho-te-ru: ホ テ ル. No ー. Do not invent one because English “hotel” feels long. Do not drop one from コーヒー because the bar looks optional. コピー is copy. コーヒー is coffee. The bar is the job.
You will also meet small ッ in ホット. That is the katakana twin of hiragana っ: a doubled consonant, a hitch in the chest, not a vowel. ホットコーヒー is hot coffee, four pieces of information: hot, long o, hi, long i. If you flatten it to “hot coffee” in English rhythm, you can still be understood at many counters. If you flatten it on the page, you cannot read the next sign. This classroom is for the page and the mouth together.
Two words to carry into a real building. コーヒー: you can order it with お願いします and finish nothing else. コーヒー、お願いします is a complete polite request. ホテル: the building you sleep in, the word on the taxi screen, the word on the key card sleeve. ホテルです can answer “what is this place?” when you are tired and the kanji on the facade is still a wall. You do not need the whole サ–ハ chart memorized before you use those two words. You need to see コ, ー, ヒ, ー and ホ, テ, ル as familiar faces, the way you saw ア and カ inside アメリカ before you owned メ.
Menus in this range are not a vocabulary parade. They are a small set of shapes that repeat: セット, スープ, ホット, アイス, ケーキ, サラダ, チーズ, トースト, サンドイッチ if you are willing to meet ッ and チ in the wild. Do not collect fifty drinks today. Collect a method. Find the ー. Find ッ. Read left to right, one mora at a time. If a word still looks like English, you are guessing. Cover the Latin letters on the bilingual menu. The Japanese line is the one the kitchen reads.
Stations will throw タクシー, バス, ホテル案内 at you. タクシー uses ク from yesterday and タ ク シー from today, plus ー. バス will want バ — dakuten on ハ — which you already understand from hiragana dakuten. Katakana dakuten is the same mark in the same job: ハ to バ, ヒ to ビ. We are not opening a new voiced chart as a mountain. We are reminding you that the flag can take a dot. ホテル案内 mixes katakana and kanji. You owe ホテル. You do not owe 案内 as this week’s writing homework. Notice it so you are not shocked. Park the kanji.
Write サシ<PRIVATE_DATE> once slowly. Then ハヒフヘホ, because ホ is inside both target words’ neighborhood. Then write コーヒー and ホテル from memory. Then ホット, セット, スープ. If シ and ツ swap, stop adding words. Fix the pair. Vanity is useless here. A clerk is not grading whether your ー is perfectly horizontal. A clerk is grading whether you said coffee or copy, hotel or bottle. ボトル is a different word. Look at ホ versus ボ if dakuten is tempting you.
If you speak English, you will want to skip ー because your inner spelling already “knows” coffee is long. Japan does not care what you know. Japan writes the bar. If you speak Korean, 장음 is a cousin idea; still look at the Japanese mark, do not guess length from hangul romanization. If you speak Mandarin, do not map ー onto a first-tone hold by default; it is length, not a tone contour. If you speak Spanish, do not turn ー into a stressed syllable mark. If you speak Arabic, ー is not a madd letter you may place by feel; it is written or it is absent. If you speak French, ホテル does not get a French mute e. Three beats: ho-te-ru.
The dialogue is a hotel morning because that is where コーヒー, ホット, セット, and ホテル sit on one tray. Staff will ask ホットコーヒーですか because Japan often wants hot or iced named, not guessed. Answer with です. Take the set with お願いします. Thank with ありがとうございます. We stay in です and ます. Anime fragments do not get you a breakfast tray.
Practice loop: the four rows once; シ versus ツ ten times; コーヒー; ホテル; ホット; セット; then the eight lines standing, as if a glass of water is actually on the wood. Tomorrow マ through ン, and a convenience-store shelf: ラーメン, パン, and the rest of the flag. If today’s ー is optional in your head, ラーメン will arrive already broken.
サ タ ナ ハ
サシ<PRIVATE_DATE>
タチツテト
ナ<PRIVATE_DATE>
ハヒフヘホ
シ versus ツ: write them as a pair. One character, one beat.
The long mark ー
ー stretches the vowel before it. It is not a hyphen.
コーヒー coffee (two ー)
ホテル hotel (no ー)
ホット hot — small ッ is a hitch, not a vowel.
Sentences you can use
Close, but not this
OK コーヒー
NG コピー
The ー is the job. コーヒー is coffee. コピー is copy. One missing bar, a different counter.
Say it out loud
Write シ and ツ as a pair, then say them.
Show answer
シ / ツ — shi and tsu — look at the slant.
Read: coffee. Order it politely.
Show answer
コーヒー、お願いします。 — Coffee, please.
Read: hotel. Make a です sentence.
Show answer
ホテルです。 — It’s a hotel.
Next: マ through ン, and a convenience-store shelf without panic — ラーメン and パン. If today’s ー is optional in your head, the cup noodles will arrive already broken.
