May I take a photo? — talking to strangers without anime-speak

Ask first. One shutter is a favor. A no is still a complete sentence.

How it works

The scene is a temple garden with a staff member, not a celebrity hunt. ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか. ここで is the place of the action. 撮る is take (a photo). てもいいですか asks “is it all right if I do.”

はい、大丈夫です is a yes. They may add a limit: フラッシュは控えてください — please hold back the flash. 控えてください is a soft “please refrain.” 人は写しません is you offering a limit: I will not photograph people.

一枚撮っていただけますか asks them to take one of you. 一枚 is one shot (flat-thing counter). ていただけますか is softer than てください. このボタンです tells them the button. Then a second object: あの建物も写してもいいですか. 写す is “capture in the picture.”

建物は大丈夫です。人の顔は避けてください. A split yes. 避けてください — please avoid. You stop. 気をつけてください is “take care,” not a scolding.

A camera does not give you rights. Japanese does. This lesson is one garden and one staff member. We will not give you a list of cute photo lines. We will stay with permission, one favor, and a boundary you do not cross.

ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか. ここで marks the place of the shooting. 写真を撮る is the set verb. てもいいですか is the permission machine: て-form plus もいいですか. You already have て. Now it asks for a green light. Shops, trains, baths, people — the same shape. 入ってもいいですか, 座ってもいいですか, 着て帰ってもいいですか. Learn it once. Hang new verbs on it.

はい、大丈夫です is a yes. だめです is a no. Both are complete. After a no: わかりました。ありがとうございます. Do not ask why unless they start the why. Do not sneak the shot from the hip. That is not a language problem. That is a trust problem.

They may add フラッシュは控えてください. 控えてください is “please refrain” — softer than ないでください, same job. You may offer a limit first: 人は写しません. 写す is to capture in the picture. Offering a limit makes a yes more likely. It is not a trick. It is a promise. Keep it.

一枚撮っていただけますか is a favor. 一枚 is one flat thing: one shot. ていただけますか is “could I receive the favor of you doing.” Heavier politeness than てください. Use it on staff and on strangers. Do not use it to install a stranger as your photographer for ten minutes. One shutter. Show このボタンです. Take the phone back. ありがとうございます.

どこを押せばいいですか is “where should I press?” ばいいですか is a useful “what should I do so that it’s good.” You can answer with a noun plus です and a finger.

あの建物も写してもいいですか is a second permission on a new object. They split the world: 建物は大丈夫です。人の顔は避けてください. 避けてください — please avoid. Faces are not decoration. In Japan, a stranger’s face in your travel post is a real problem. Hear the split. Obey the half that is だめ.

一緒に撮ってもいいですか is “may I take one with you?” Only when the temperature is already warm — a clerk you have spoken with, not a person in kimono you just saw. Easy to refuse. Accept the refuse like a professional.

気をつけてください is “take care,” a kind close on wet stones. Not a siren.

Do not use お前, ねえ、撮ってよ, or idol-fan Japanese. Do not step on gravel that is raked. Do not turn a no into a negotiation about “just the building from this other angle” five times.

Korean speakers: 찍어도 돼요 is a close cousin of 撮ってもいいですか. Good. 찍어 주세요 is closer to 撮ってください; 撮っていただけますか is one step softer. Chinese speakers: 可以拍照吗 is the permission. Japanese often needs the place: ここで. English speakers: “Can you take a pic?” is a favor, so use ていただけますか, not the same line as permission. Spanish speakers: 一枚 is one shot, not “one more” unless you add もう. もう一枚お願いします is a second shot. Ask once.

Practice the permission line, then the favor line, then the thank-you after a no. The third is the one people skip. Next we stand at a bus pole when the app has lied, and we ask if this bus actually goes there.

Trains, museums, and people in uniform are often だめです without a sign you can read. That is why the ask exists. A missing sign is not a yes. 撮ってもいいですか is how you turn a missing sign into an answer. If no one is there to ask, and the room feels like a shrine inner hall, do not shoot. The silence is the answer.

Drones are a different law. This lesson is a camera or a phone in a garden. Keep it that small. 一枚 is one. If they enjoy it and offer もう一枚, accept once. Do not become a director.

Children: do not photograph someone’s child because the light was good. There is no cute Japanese that makes that all right. 人の顔は避けてください was not decoration in the dialogue. It was the second half of the yes.

Portuguese and French speakers: てもいいですか is permission for your action. ていただけますか is a request for their action. Do not mix them. “May I” and “could you” are different doors in Japanese too. Indonesian speakers: だめです is a complete no. You do not need to hear 理由. Hindi readers: 一枚 is a counter, not “one more” unless もう sits in front.

Walk out of the garden with the photo you were allowed, not the one you wanted. That gap is the manners. The language only works if the no is real. Next time a bus pole lies, you will ask another yes/no. Same mouth. Different object.

If a stranger on the street asks you to take their photo, you may say はい、どうぞ and use どこを押せばいいですか in reverse. You are now the staff in the dialogue. One shutter. Hand the phone back. Do not become their tour. The lesson was how to ask, and therefore also how to be asked. Both sides stay short. Both sides stay です/ます. That is how a garden stays a garden.

A yes for a building is not a yes for a person standing in front of it. If someone walks into your frame, wait. 今は人がいます is a sentence you can say to yourself. います for a person, beginner-05, still true in a garden. When they pass, shoot. The permission you received was for a place and a limit. Stay inside both.
