A name, a country, a first time. Then one true thing, and the door.
In this lesson you will
- Give ミナです and answer どちらから来ましたか
- Answer 日本は初めてですか with はい、初めてです
- Offer one feeling — 静かな朝が好きです — and close without a monologue
初めてです is a complete sentence. You do not need 日本に来るのはこれが初めてです unless you enjoy long stairs. The short line is what people actually say.
Today’s scene
How it works
The scene is a cafe you have already used, not a first meeting on a train. Temperature matters. おはようございます is allowed here because the room already knows your face. Then they ask the name they never took: お名前、まだ聞いていませんでした. 聞いていませんでした is past-negative ている: I had not heard it yet.
ミナです. どちらから来ましたか is the polite “where did you come from?” どちら is softer than どこ. カナダから来ました. から marks the origin. 来ました is polite past “came.”
日本は初めてですか topics Japan. はい、初めてです. 初めて is “the first time.” Plus です it is a full answer. 日本はどうですか is wide. Give one true noun or adjective: 静かな朝が好きです. 好きです takes が, beginner-17. One fact. Not a podcast.
また来ますか / はい、また来ます. また is again. You can leave. ありがとうございます. You do not owe them your job, your visa plan, or your ex.
You have asked gates, bowls, and buses. Someone will finally ask about you. This lesson is that talk, in a cafe that already knows your drink and not your name. We will not print a self-introduction worksheet with ten slots. Name, country, first time, one feeling, the door. That is a conversation. A worksheet is a list.
おはようございます is correct in this room because the relationship already has mornings. On a train with a stranger, it can be too much. Temperature is part of Japanese. The travel series has been training temperature the whole time: booth, gate, counter, garden, koban. A cafe on visit three is warm enough for a name.
お名前、まだ聞いていませんでした. まだ is still. 聞いていませんでした is “I had not heard / I had not asked.” Past-negative ている. You do not need to build this line. You need to hear it as a kind opening, not as a test. ミナです. No さん on yourself. They will say ミナさん. That is the default respect tag from beginner-01, still true on the last travel morning.
どちらから来ましたか. どちら is the polite which-place. 来ました is past come. カナダから来ました. から marks origin — the same から as 今日から at the pharmacy, now on a country. Swap the country. Keep the machine. 韓国から来ました, ブラジルから来ました, アメリカから来ました. If they ask お国はどちらですか, カナダです is enough. Two shapes, one fact.
日本は初めてですか topics Japan and asks first-time. はい、初めてです. Do not climb the long stair 日本に来るのはこれが初めてです unless you enjoy grammar as sport. People say 初めてです. If it is not the first, 二回目です, 三回目です. 回 counts visits.
日本はどうですか is wide on purpose. They are offering you a place to put one true thing. 静かな朝が好きです. 静か is a な-adjective; 静かな朝 is a quiet morning. 好きです takes が. One fact. 人が親切です is another. 食べ物がおいしいです is fine and common. A three-minute speech about politics is a different room. You may also say まだわかりません — I don’t know yet. Honest.
If they say 日本語、上手ですよ, まだ少しだけです is a soft landing. Do not fight the compliment with a lecture. Do not agree that you are fluent after sixteen travel lessons. You are not. You are useful in rooms. That is the goal.
日本語を勉強しています is optional ている. お仕事は何ですか may come. 学生です, 会社員です, or 今は旅行です. Short.
また来ますか. はい、また来ます。ありがとうございます. また is again. The door is open. You can leave the series here. If a particle still slips, beginner is still downstairs. If a kana still blurs on a menu, kana is still downstairs. Travel was never a replacement for those floors. It was the rooms those floors were for.
Do not switch to 俺, あたし, or anime sparkle because the barista smiled. The smile is a shop smile plus a little real warmth. Keep です/ます. You can be warm and polite at the same time. That has been the whole argument of this classroom.
Korean speakers: 어디에서 왔어요 is a cousin of どちらから来ましたか. Japanese likes から on the origin and 来ました at the end. Chinese speakers: 第一次 is 初めて. The Japanese word is not 第一次 said with Japanese vowels. English speakers: “I’m from Canada” is カナダから来ました when they asked with 来ました, or カナダです when they asked お国は. Match their verb. Spanish speakers: 好きです still takes が, not を. 朝が好きです.
Say the four answers while holding a cup: name, country, first time, one liking. Then stop talking. The silence after 好きです is also Japanese. You have enough now to land, to ride, to eat, to ask, and to be a person in a morning cafe. That is a complete first trip mouth.
Small talk on a train is a different temperature. Do not take this cafe scene onto a silent car and open with どちらから来ましたか toward a stranger. The travel series has been a school of rooms. The last room is a cafe that already knows your face. That is why おはようございます is in the dialogue. Earn the morning before you spend it.
If they ask more — 何日間ですか, 京都も行きますか — you already have 一週間です and 行きます from earlier lessons. Answer one, then drink. You are not a podcast guest. You are a regular of three mornings.
Couples and friends will use shorter Japanese. You may hear だね, そうなんだ. You do not have to follow them there today. です/ます remains a complete personality. Warm and polite is not a contradiction. It is the voice this classroom chose on the pillar page, and it is still the voice that works at a desk, a gate, and a cup.
Hindi, Arabic, and Vietnamese readers: the Japanese in the boxes did not change because the topic became “you.” 初めてです is still a です sentence. French and German speakers: 好きです takes が. Do not import “I like” plus a direct object を. Malay and Indonesian speakers: また来ます is future enough. Japanese present here is a plan.
When you close this tab, say the four answers once without looking, then go do a real errand in whatever city you are in — even if that city is not Japan. The mouth needs a room. The travel series gave you sixteen. The next room is yours.
If you want to ask them a question back, one is enough: ここは毎日忙しいですか, or おすすめは何ですか about a pastry. Then stop. Small talk is a cup that overflows if you keep pouring. The travel series taught you to finish rooms. Finish this one while it is still kind. Tomorrow you may ride a bus. The barista will still be here. また来ます was a promise you can keep without a speech.
You may feel the urge to list every lesson you survived. Do not. 初めてです already contains the week. The gate, the bowl, the towel, the garden — they are in your mouth, not in this cafe’s air. Leave them there. Order the coffee the way travel-10 taught you. That repetition is not a failure of originality. It is how a traveler becomes a person who comes back.
Name and origin
ミナです。
どちらから来ましたか。→ カナダから来ました。
日本は初めてですか。→ はい、初めてです。
One feeling, then the door
日本はどうですか。→ 静かな朝が好きです。
また来ますか。→ はい、また来ます。
Sentences you can use
Close, but not this
OK はい、初めてです。
NG 日本初めて来ちゃった、超ワクワク。
Variety-show Japanese. A barista asked a yes/no. Give 初めてです.
OK カナダから来ました。
NG 俺、カナダ人。
俺 is the wrong temperature and the wrong gender assumption. から来ました answers どちらから.
Say it out loud
They ask your name. Answer with です.
Show answer
(名前)です。 — (Name) desu.
They ask where you came from. You came from Canada.
Show answer
カナダから来ました。 — I came from Canada.
They ask if this is your first time in Japan. It is.
Show answer
はい、初めてです。 — Yes. It’s my first time.
Travel rooms close. Register opens: two rooms, not a personality swap. You can land, tap, ride, eat, sleep, ask, and leave a little of yourself in a cafe. Keep です at the next counter. The second series is a door, not a new self.
