An empty bowl. おいしかったです is for this moment, not the first bite.
In this lesson you will
- Say おいしかったです / 高かったです / よかったです
- Say 静かでした / 好きでした / 便利でした
- Avoid い-adjective + でした, which is the famous broken past
い-adjectives conjugate themselves, then take です. な-adjectives behave like nouns: でした. Two families, two pasts. Mixing them is the whole error.
Today’s scene
How it works
い-adjective past: drop い, add かった, then です. おいしい → おいしかったです. 高い → 高かったです. あつい → あつかったです. いい / よい → よかったです. That last one is the past you will say after a trip, a meal, a room: よかったです。
Negative past for い: くなかったです. 高くなかったです. おいしくなかったです. You may also hear 高くありませんでした. Produce くなかったです this week if you need a no.
な-adjective past: stem + でした. 静かでした. 便利でした. 好きでした. きれいでした. Same shape as 学生でした. Negative: 静かじゃなかったです or 静かではありませんでした. Again, one is enough to produce.
Never おいしいでした. Never 高いでした. The い-adjective already built its past as かった. でした is the past of です after nouns and な-stems. If you stack い + でした, you have two past machines in one parking space.
Adjectives in the past are where the two families stop pretending to be the same. In the present, 高いです and 静かです both end in です, so students think past is a universal でした. It is not. い-adjectives change their own body. な-adjectives borrow the noun past.
い-past: cut い, add かったです. おいしい has three い sounds; you cut the last one, the grammar い. おいし + かったです. 高い → 高かったです. さむい → さむかったです. いそがしい → いそがしかったです. Practice slowly so かった does not swallow the stem.
いい becomes よかったです. This is the same irregular you met in よくないです. The old よい returns for past and for negative. よかったです is also what you say when news is a relief: a train you caught, a bag you found, a room that was free. Context decides between “it was good” and “thank goodness”. Both are the same form.
Negative い-past: くなかったです. 高くないです was the present no. Insert かった after な: 高くなかったです. It is a long word. Say it in two breaths if you must: たかく / なかったです. Do not skip く. 高いなかったです is wrong.
な-past: でした. 静かでした. にぎやかでした. 便利でした. きれいでした. 好きでした. 嫌いでした. 元気でした. You already know でした from nouns if beginner-08 touched 学生でした or you have heard そうでした. Same closer.
好きでした keeps が on the liked thing: あのセットが好きでした. Past does not license を. The particle lesson did not expire because time passed.
どうでしたか is the question that pulls these answers out. カフェはどうでしたか。天気はどうでしたか。 You may answer with one adjective. よかったです is a complete reply. Adding a second sentence is kindness, not a requirement: おいしかったです。静かでした。
Pronunciation: かった is ka-t-ta, with a small stop, not “kata” as two airy syllables with no catch. If you speak English, put a tiny freeze before た. Korean speakers already know 된 소리-like tension; use it. でした is de-shi-ta, not “deshta” smashed, not “de-shee-tah” with an English extra vowel.
Chinese speakers: 了 is not でした glued to every adjective. Pick the family first. Spanish speakers: estaba rico is a meaning cousin of おいしかったです, not a form cousin. Do not look for estar versus ser in です versus でした here; both families still sit in the です/ます world.
Casual おいしかった, 静かだった, よかったね will hit your ear on trains. Your production at a desk stays です/でした. おいしかったです is not childish. It is the correct polite past.
A social note: おいしかったです is also how you thank a meal that is over, even if no one asked. You can say it to a host. You can say it to cafe staff if they ask いかがでしたか. You do not need a paragraph of food-blog English.
In the dialogue, Sato uses どうでしたか, then 静かでしたか — past questions. Mina answers in matching past. また行きますか returns to present/future ます. That switch is real: the meal is past, the next visit is not. Do not put かった on 行きます. Verbs have their own ました, which you already have. Today is adjectives only.
Practice with a finished day. Three い-pasts: weather, food, price. Two な-pasts: the room, the town. One よかったです. If おいしいでした appears, erase it like a spill.
Write the two machines on one card. Left: い → かったです. Right: な/noun → でした. That card is the lesson. ている can wait until the card is boring.
Two columns on paper, again. Left い: おいしい → おいしかったです, 高い → 高かったです, やすい → やすかったです, あつい → あつかったです, さむい → さむかったです, いそがしい → いそがしかったです, たのしい → たのしかったです, いい → よかったです. Right な: 静か → 静かでした, 便利 → 便利でした, きれい → きれいでした, にぎやか → にぎやかでした, 好き → 好きでした, 元気 → 元気でした, 暇 → 暇でした. Cover the present. Say the past. The family split should feel like two different sports.
よかったです as relief: 間に合いました. よかったです. You may not have 間に合う yet. You still need よかったです after good news. It is social oil. It is also the past of いい. One form, two jobs, both polite with です.
いかがでしたか is a staff question after a meal or a stay. どうでしたか is a friendlier twin. Answer with one past adjective. おいしかったです. よかったです. ちょっと高かったです is honest if you say it gently, not as a fight. 高かったですね to a friend is bonding. To the chef, maybe not.
Negative past な: 静かじゃなかったです, 好きじゃなかったです. Long. Legal. ではありませんでした is the pressed shirt: 好きではありませんでした. Produce one. Understand both.
Do not past-ify です on an い-adjective. The broken form おいしいでした is so common among learners that teachers hear it in their sleep. If you say it, correct in the same breath: おいしかったです. Immediate repair teaches more than a later note.
Verb past ました is next door and must not bleed. 食べました = I ate. おいしかったです = it was delicious. You often want both: パンを食べました。おいしかったです。 That pair is a whole postcard. Adjective past does not replace ました. It describes the thing after.
Korean 었다 / 했어요, Chinese 了, English was, Spanish estaba/fue: none of them tell you which Japanese family you are in. Decide い versus な first, then pick かったです or でした. Hindi tha/thi agrees with gender; Japanese past adjectives do not.
Practice on yesterday, not on a fictional Japan. 天気はよかったです。朝のコーヒーはあつかったです。店は便利でした。部屋は静かでした。ねだんは高くなかったです。 Five honest lines. If yesterday was ugly, さむかったです is still a perfect sentence.
Write おいしいでした on a scrap and cross it out. Then write おいしかったです. Physical crossing-out helps more than we admit.
ている is a present thickness, not a past. Do not prepare it by putting て on adjectives. おいしくて was a connector, おいしかった is a past. Different て/た neighborhood. Keep tonight in かった and でした only.
If you need a plain English test, use this: was the bun delicious after it was gone. That sentence is past quality, so you want the い-family past, not a polite です glued onto the present adjective. Was the room quiet after you left. That is the な-family past, the same shape as a noun plus the polite past closer. Was it good news. Relief uses the irregular good-word past. Three English questions, three Japanese machines. Ask them about a real yesterday, out loud, before you open a dictionary. The dictionary will not be at the table when someone asks how the cafe was.
い-adjective past
おいしい → おいしかったです。 It was delicious.
高い → 高かったです。 It was expensive.
いい → よかったです。 It was good. / I’m glad.
な-adjective past

便利 → 便利でした。 It was convenient.
Not: おいしいでした。
